How to Choose the Right Rivetnut
Choosing the right rivetnut starts with understanding the material you are fastening into and the job the fixing needs to do. This guide covers the main points to check before selecting a threaded insert.
Match the thread to your bolt
Select a rivetnut with the correct thread size and pitch for your bolt or screw. Thread size alone does not determine the strength of the complete fixing. The insert, parent material and installation quality all play a part.
Check the material thickness
Measure the thickness of the material where the rivetnut will be installed. Choose an insert whose specified grip range includes that thickness. Using an insert outside its grip range can prevent it from setting correctly.
Select a suitable material
Rivetnuts are available in materials such as aluminium, steel and stainless steel. Consider the strength needed, exposure to moisture or chemicals, and compatibility with the surrounding material. Check the manufacturer's technical information rather than relying on material choice alone.
Consider the body shape
Round, knurled and hexagonal bodies suit different applications. Knurled or hexagonal designs can help resist rotation, but performance depends on the hole preparation, parent material and installation. Hexagonal inserts require a matching hole shape.
Choose the head style
Head style affects how the insert sits against the surface. A larger flange provides a wider bearing surface, while reduced-head or countersunk designs may be useful where a lower-profile finish is needed. Follow the specified hole preparation requirements for your chosen insert.
Check tool compatibility
Use an installation tool compatible with the rivetnut's material and thread size. Fit the correct mandrel and nosepiece, and follow the tool and insert manufacturer's setting instructions.
Confirm suitability before use
Check the specified hole size, grip range and performance data. For a new application, test the fixing in representative material before committing to production. Load-bearing or safety-critical applications require appropriate technical assessment and testing.
