A Guide to Rivetnuts
What is a rivetnut?
A rivetnut, also known as a rivet nut or blind threaded insert, creates a threaded fixing point in material that may be too thin to tap directly. It allows a bolt or screw to be fitted into sheet metal, tubing and other suitable components.
How does a rivetnut work?
A rivetnut is inserted into a correctly sized hole and set using a compatible installation tool. During installation, the body deforms behind the material to hold the insert in place. The internal thread remains available for a bolt or screw.
Because installation can be carried out from one side, rivetnuts are useful where access to the back of a component is limited.
Where are rivetnuts used?
Typical applications include brackets, panels, enclosures, vehicle components and fabricated assemblies. They provide a threaded fixing that allows the attached part to be removed and refitted without replacing the insert, provided the fixing remains in good condition.
Choosing the right rivetnut
The right insert depends on your material, application and fixing requirements. Check the following before selecting a rivetnut:
- Thread size: Match the insert to the bolt or screw you intend to use.
- Grip range: Select an insert with a grip range that includes the thickness of the material.
- Material: Consider strength, corrosion resistance and compatibility with the component.
- Body shape: Round, knurled and hexagonal designs have different hole requirements and resistance to rotation.
- Head style: Choose a head suited to your surface finish and clearance requirements.
Installation considerations
Always follow the insert and tool manufacturer's instructions. Use the specified hole size, prepare the hole correctly and set the tool for the insert being installed. An unsuitable hole, incorrect grip range or excessive setting force can affect the quality of the fixing.
For load-bearing or safety-critical applications, verify the fixing's suitability through the relevant technical data and appropriate testing.
