Brass Wood Inserts
Brass wood inserts create a metal machine thread in timber and wood-based panels. Once installed, they accept a matching bolt or machine screw, allowing components to be removed and refitted without repeatedly driving a wood screw into the same hole.
They are a practical option for furniture, cabinetry, shopfitting and joinery where a reusable threaded connection is needed. Suitability for solid wood, MDF, chipboard or plywood depends on the insert design and the material's thickness and condition.
How Wood Inserts Work
The insert's external thread engages with the surrounding material, while its internal thread provides the mounting point for the bolt or screw. Correct hole preparation and straight installation help the insert seat securely without splitting or damaging the panel.
The 41/TRB Wood Insert
The 41/TRB design features a pronounced external thread intended to grip the surrounding timber. Metric internal thread options include M4, M5, M6, M8 and M10.
Choose the thread size and insert length to suit the component, available material thickness and required performance. Check the product specification for dimensions, recommended hole preparation and installation tooling.
Why Use Brass Wood Inserts?
- Reusable machine threads: Attach components with matching bolts or machine screws.
- Convenient dismantling: Remove the attached component while leaving the insert in place.
- Less repeated wear on the timber hole: Routine assembly takes place in the metal thread rather than directly in the wood.
- Flexible assembly: Useful for removable fittings, furniture components and display systems.
Choosing the Right Insert
Consider the timber or panel type, thickness, edge distance and expected loads. The strength of the finished connection depends on the surrounding material as well as the insert, so a metal thread alone does not guarantee a stronger joint.
Brass and steel insert designs offer different options. Select using the relevant product data rather than assuming either material is suitable for every application.
Installation Considerations
- Prepare the hole to the diameter and depth specified for the insert and material.
- Use the recommended driver or installation tool.
- Keep the insert aligned with the hole as it is fitted.
- Seat it to the specified position without excessive tightening.
- Fit the matching screw or bolt, checking that it does not bottom out or extend beyond the available clearance.
Make trial installations when working with a new timber or panel material. For demanding connections, verify retention and joint performance before production.
